Road Steel Strengthens Road Safety on the A-67 with New Vehicle Restraint Systems

Road Steel Vehicle Restraint Systems are present in more than 50 countries, with a particularly strong presence in Spain, where many advances in road safety bear our hallmark.

On July 21, we witnessed how our work significantly improved the safety of Cantabria’s road network with the inauguration of the upgraded A-67 motorway. This extensive project, with a long history in the region, included major improvements to its connectivity through new interchanges, an additional lane, a 270-metre viaduct, and the Las Rozas cut-and-cover tunnel, measuring 422 metres in length and 30 metres in depth, equipped with a solar power system to ensure energy self-sufficiency. The project also incorporated significant road safety enhancements. These improvements will facilitate mobility both within Cantabria and beyond, substantially enhancing transport connections across the region.

What was Road Steel’s role in this project?

In this project, Road Steel was responsible for the design, manufacture and installation of a range of protection solutions for the thousands of vehicles that use this route every day:

• Vehicle Restraint Systems consisting of single highway guardrails with containment levels N2, H1 and H2, ensuring the appropriate level of vehicle containment for each section of the motorway.
• Crash Cushions, installed to guarantee continuous protection for road users at both the beginning and end of the safety barrier systems.
• Median Overpass Barriers, designed and manufactured in accordance with the new EN 1317-9 Standard.

As with all our projects, the manufacture of these systems was carried out at Gonvarri Asturias, where we apply the highest standards of quality and production control. This industrial capability enables us to adapt to the specific requirements of each infrastructure project, delivering reliable, durable solutions aligned with the highest levels of safety.

The opening of this new section once again demonstrates Road Steel’s position as a key contributor to the improvement of road infrastructure and safer road connectivity.
