Sharing Knowledge: Technical Seminar on Vehicle Restraint Systems

At Road Steel, road safety does not end with the installation of protection systems. We go beyond that, working to generate, share, and apply knowledge that contributes to safer roads.

A clear example of this was the Technical Seminar on Vehicle Restraint Systems promoted by ACEX, an event designed to encourage analysis and knowledge sharing in the field of road safety, focused on the real-world performance of these safety systems.

The seminar, organized together with our collaborators at the Association of Infrastructure Maintenance and Operation Companies (ACEX), took place at Viantia, a testing facility that we use when certifying our protection systems, including highway guardrails, bridge parapets, end barriers, transitions, motorcyclist protection systems (MPS), crash cushions, and pedestrian parapets. This facility makes it possible to observe the behavior of these systems under real vehicle impact conditions.

During the event, which we were honored to hold in the presence of representatives from the Xunta de Galicia, participants explored the challenges presented by the bow-tie parapet design, which is widely installed across many road networks. This analysis provided context for a live TB32 crash test conducted on a bow-tie parapet with optimized characteristics designed to improve containment levels and enhance road user protection.

The presentations delivered by Road Steel, together with contributions from SIMEPROVI Association, and the live crash test enabled all attendees to gain a better understanding of the elements evaluated and how their characteristics influence road safety performance.

For the Road Steel engineering team, this was a unique opportunity to demonstrate the value of real crash testing and how test results are translated into decisions regarding the design, manufacturing, implementation, and maintenance of road safety products.

The event concluded with a networking session that encouraged the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and perspectives, strengthening collaboration among the various stakeholders involved in road safety and bringing a highly valuable meeting to a successful close.
